Yoga Assists and Adjusts for Teachers.jpg

Explore the Art of
Yoga Assists

Skilled yoga teachers employ a variety of tools in order to guide students in their own experience of yoga.

This includes, but is not limited to our own presence, attentiveness and energy as well as our verbal and visual cues, to our use of metaphor and story–telling, all of which embody a 'hands-off' approach to assisting students in classes.

The purpose of a yoga assist is to empower the individual to deepen their own experience of asana; first without touch

Once we have a solid understanding of how to provide HANDS OFF assists, we’ll explore HANDS-ON assists: asking permission in the first instance, finding the ‘perfect fit’ plus how to use a guiding touch in order to enhance how students might embody a pose on their own, and perhaps cultivate a more mindful quality of attention by aligning the energetic principles of the teacher and student as well as the physical assist itself.

Learning Objectives:

  • Develop confidence and ease in connecting with students of varying levels of experience.

  • Create a steady foundation for your own body while assisting

  • Experience the joy of giving and receiving assistance from other experienced students and teachers.

  • Bring renewed attention to the breath and the voice as tools for assisting students.

  • Practice supporting advanced asanas, including arm balances and heart openers.

Explore the teacher-student dynamic

In this Continuing Education workshop, we learn a variety of ways teachers can empower students to adjust themselves in their own yoga practice and by doing so provide safe, effective yoga assists.
