5 Ways a Prenatal Yoga Class can support Your Pregnancy

Here are just a handful of the benefits and practices that prenatal specific yoga provides for pregnant women:

  1. Embrace Change

Prenatal yoga can help women gain a greater awareness of their changing body, it can and should be practiced in ALL trimesters of pregnancy, with specific considerations needed for each trimester. Prenatal yoga postures often differ from postures you might see in a regular yoga class - though there are some that may be familiar, we do not practice any yoga asana that is contraindicated, we cater prenatal postures to suit the individual person and their unique pregnancy; both beginners and experienced students are catered for in our pregnancy yoga classes; no prior yoga experience is needed to join our classes.

  2. Physical Demands

The needs of a pregnant body are not only different, but will change as your pregnancy progresses; the emphasis in prenatal yoga class is slow and strong - in ways that you might not expect! Strengthening postures provide support in the parts of the body that need it, helping to ease hip and back pain; plus prenatal specific core and pelvic floor movements. We use postures to provide and movements than provide stability, which is often lacking in pregnancy and this also helps build resilience. Another bonus of coming to class is that we will show yoga postures and breathing techniques that can be used during labour and birth.

  3. Spiritual

Whether you realise it or not, pregnancy is the beginning of your journey into motherhood; a profound journey of transformation Through a deeper awareness and understanding of your body you learn how to stand in your power and discover the true meaning of surrender: the intuitive wisdom of yielding in the context of birth. Additionally, yogic philosophy emphasises that the essence of yoga is unity; pregnancy is the ultimate union: the only time in life where two souls live and breathe together.

  4. Mental Resilience

During pregnancy, the structure and function of a pregnant woman’s brain changes.

In our pregnancy yoga classes we apply Yogic wisdom along with intuitive, feminine movement in the context of yoga for pregnancy and birth for mental resilience and mindfulness. Part of the mental preparation includes learning ways to manage and cope with pain through yogic practices, while creating an atmosphere of trust.

  5. Connection

The mindful relaxation and meditation practices included in a pregnancy class provides a beautiful way to connect with your unborn baby. And by offering a series of classes it serves to foster community between other pregnancy women and provide a continuity of care with your specially trained prenatal yoga teacher.

Committing to a regular practice of prenatal yoga is just one of the ways in which you can start to nourish yourself from the inside out and truly lean in to the inner knowing of your body and your baby!
